Names of Satan

Satan SA'TAN, noun [Heb. an adversary.] The grand adversary of man; the devil or prince of darkness; the chief of the fallen angels.

Adversary

AD'VERSARY, noun

1. An enemy or foe; one who has enmity at heart.

The Lord shall take vengeance on his adversaries. Nahum 1.

In scripture, Satan is called THE adversary by way of eminence. 1 Peter 5:8.

2. An opponent or antagonist, as in a suit at law, or in single combat; an opposing litigant.

AD'VERSARY, adjective Opposed; opposite to; adverse. In law, having an opposing party, as an adversary suit; in distinction from an application, in law or equity, to which no opposition is made.

1. Satan

Job 1:6-9 6Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. 7And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, from going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. 8And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? 9Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

Matthew 4:10 10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

The title "Satan" occurs 53 times in 47 verses in the Bible. The primary idea is adversary, one who withstands.

2. The Devil

Matthew 4:1, 5, 11 1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 5Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 11Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Ephesians 4:27 27Neither give place to the devil.

Revelations 12:9, 20:2 9And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 2And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

Devil is the Greek word diabollos which means "slanderer, defamer." This accentuates his goal and work to impugn the character of God.

3. The Serpent

Revelation 12:9 9And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

This name for Satan looks back to Genesis 3 and the temptation in the Garden.

4. Lucifer

Isaiah 14:12 12How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

The Hebrew word for Lucifer (KJV translation) is literally "the shining one." This name draws our attention to his pre-fall condition and to the nature of the cause of his fall, which was his pride.

5. The Evil One

John 17:15 15I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

1 John 5:9 9If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

The Greek poneros means "wicked, evil, bad, base, worthless, vicious, degenerate. It points to Satan's character as active and malignant.

6. The Dragon

Revelation 12:7 7And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

The Greek word is drakon (as in draconian) and refers to a "hideous monster, a dragon, or large serpent." This word stresses the cruel, vicious, and blood thirsty character and power of Satan.

7. The Prince of this World

John 12:31 31Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

The Greek literally means, "the ruler of this world system." This points to Satan as the head and energy behind the arrangements of things as they are in the world today.

8. The God of This World

2 Corinthians 4:4 4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

The fact Satan is called, the god of this world (Greek, aionos, "age, course") may emphasize Satan's ruler ship over this final period or economy which is so marked by a growing increase in apostasy, deception, and moral decay.

9. The Prince of the Power of the Air

Ephesians 2:2 2Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

This points to Satan as the head of the demonic hosts which includes all the fallen angelic beings who operate night and day in our immediate spiritual atmosphere-an atmosphere of demonic influence controlled by Satan.

10. The Accuser of the Brethren

Revelation 12:10 10And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

The Greek word for "accuser" is kathgor, which refers to one who brings condemning accusations against others. In view of Job 1 and 2, this is also an attempt to malign the character of God and His plan. 2).

11. The Tempter

Matthew 4:3 3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

1 Thessalonians 3:5 5For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

This title reveals him in another of his primary activities as seen from the very beginning with Eve in the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3).

12. Belial

2 Corinthians 6:15 15And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? This name means worthless or hopeless ruin. The epitome of worthlessness, hopeless ruin and the source of all idolatry and religion which is also hopeless or futile.

13. Beelzebub

Matthew 12:24 24But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

Mark 3:22 22And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.

Three possible spellings of this word each have a different meaning: 1.Beelzebul means "lord of the dung," a name of reproach. 2. Beelzebub means "lord of the flies." Either one of these are names of reproach and are names of uncleanness applied to Satan, the prince of the demons and uncleanness. 3. Beelzeboul, means, "the lord of the dwelling." This would identify Satan as the god of demon possession. This spelling has the best manuscript evidence behind it.

14. Abaddon and Apollyon

Revelation 9:11 11And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

Abaddon is the Greek form and Apollyon is the Hebrew equivalent. These words mean destroyer, destruction. This title stresses his work of destruction; he works to destroy the glory of God and God's purpose with man. He further works to destroy societies and mankind.

15. The Proud One

Isaiah 14:12-14 12How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

16. The Father of Lies

John 8:44 44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Using his network of deception through demonic forces, he promotes false doctrines in the name of God.

17. A False Angel of Light

2 Corinthians 11:14 14And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. One of his purposes is to make men as much like God as he can, but always without God. So, he will copy as much of God and His plan as he can, but he will always either distort, pervert, substitute or leave out those key ingredients of truth that are vital to the plan of salvation and sanctification through Christ.

18. Oppressor

Acts 10:38 38How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

19. Enemy

Matthew 13:39 39The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. "The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels." (See also Job 1 & 2)

1 Peter 5:8 8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

21. Corrupter of Minds

2 Corinthians 11:3 3But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

22. King

Revelation 9:11 11And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. (See also Ephesians 6:12)

23. Liar

24. Wicked One

Matthew 13:19 19When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

25. Prince of Darkness

Ephesians 6:12 12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

26. Thief

John 10:10 10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

1 Peter 5:8 8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

28. Anointed Cherub

Ezekiel 28:14 14Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
